Case : Art museum in Oulu city centre
Main idea is to have a museum that allows artworks to be enjoyed from the outside of the building as well, the tendency is to celebrate the work of art along with the other outdoor public activity.
The other idea is that the functions inside the building can spill over in the outdoors to create more engaging activities for the public around the site.
In order to achieve these two ideas I thought of not putting the functions by the edges of the given site rather to work with the shape of the functions to create pocket spaces outdoors for engaging activities around the site.
These pocket spaces will create scope for functions like outdoor cafes, outdoor exhibition areas and outdoor activity areas.
The plot is centrally located in the center of Oulu, at the intersection of longer pedestrian streets (Kauppurienkatu & Isokatu) thus it is important to take into account the functionality of the facilities and services from the pedestrian perspective and create interesting urban spaces between buildings. The urban space should be a pleasant space where people want to spend more time and feel safe as well as find interesting activities to enjoy throughout the year at different times of the day and on different festivals.
Once the pedestrian area of Kauppurienkatu is enhanced with such activities it will be easier to form a connection with the greenery located in Vaaranpuisto right next to the site, but the current Kauppurien aukio is not using all of its potential as a part of the green city structure. Revitalizing the site and its surrounding by creating a public hub is needed.
Such outdoor exhibition areas will encourage young and local artists to display their works regularly to the public of Oulu city and tourists visiting the site.
The Oulu Art Museum features an outdoor exhibition area designed to encourage more local artists to display their works. This area extends from the courtyard situated within the site to the terrace of the building.
The block is easily accessible for pedestrians from all four sides. In addition, these entrances are made for the convenience of getting faster into the inner space of the block. The site is also easily accessible by cars and public transportation like buses. There is a cycling route through the site for better connectivity in a sustainable way.
The hotel block and the conference block are located on the Saaristonkatu side as it makes vehicular access to the site easier.
The designed plot has other functions like the hotel and conference center which creates a scope for the site to have people from all over the world attending seminars, conferences or shows as well as tourists staying at the hotel in the city center near other important facilities. This has a positive impact for the museum as well to represent Oulu’s art and culture to greater audiences. The inner courtyard created by the building blocks of the site will become the next public hub of Oulu city center with different user groups enjoying different activities on the same site.
